Amina had always believed in justice. Growing up in northern Nigeria, she saw firsthand the challenges women and girls faced, early marriages cutting dreams short, gender-based violence silencing voices, and limited access to justice keeping women in the shadows. But Amina was not one to remain silent. She became an advocate, pushing for the rights of women and girls. However, she soon realized that while Nigeria had ratified the Maputo Protocol, a groundbreaking legal framework protecting women’s rights, its promises remained just words on paper.

One day, after a particularly disheartening legal battle where a young girl was denied justice due to the gaps in domestic law, Amina took to social media to vent her frustrations. "How do we move forward when the laws that should protect us remain unenforced?" she tweeted. The response was overwhelming, hundreds of young women and men echoed her concerns. This was bigger than one case; it was a national issue.

That’s why Baobab for Women’s Human Rights is hosting the X-Space Live Event on March 10, 2025, in commemoration of International Women’s Day under the theme:

“Accelerating Action on Women’s Progress in Nigeria: From Ratification to Domestication of the Maputo Protocol.”

Why Does This Matter?

Nigeria ratified the Maputo Protocol in 2004, yet 21 years later, it remains undomesticated, meaning its protections for women's rights are not fully enforceable. This delay contributes to continued violence against women, limited political representation, and economic barriers that keep millions of women from achieving their full potential.

This X-Space event is a call to action. It’s an opportunity for young people, advocates, policymakers, and everyday Nigerians to come together, discuss the challenges, and push for real, actionable change.

What to Expect?

Engaging Discussions: Three guest speakers, two young advocates and an expert from the Clinic for Human Rights, Obafemi Awolowo University, will lead insightful conversations on the Maputo Protocol.

Real-Time Participation: Audience members can ask questions, share experiences, and vote in polls to shape the discussion.

Amina’s frustration turned into action. This event is for people like her, those who know that progress isn’t just about promises; it’s about action. Whether you’re an activist, a student, a policymaker, or simply someone who believes in justice, your voice matters.
